Quality Control Microbiologist

Essence shares her career journey from Quality Control Lab Technician at Pepsi Bottling to an internship at Novo Nordisk, a position as a Manufacturing Associate, and a promotion to Quality Control Microbiologist.

What biotechnology program did you attend?
Johnston Community College in North Carolina.  I attended the BioBlend program.

What degrees or certificates have you completed?
I completed the BioWork certificate in high school and then an AS at Johnston Community College.

Are you working on more advanced degrees?
Yes.  I am currently enrolled at Eastern Carolina University and am completing my Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering Technology with a concentration in Bioprocessing Manufacturing. I plan to complete a Master's as well.

What can you tell us about your career path?
I started off as a Quality Control Lab Technician at Pepsi Bottling ventures. Participated in an internship through the Bioblend program at Novo Nordisk. I was hired as a Manufacturing Associate at Novo Nordisk API in Clayton, NC. I relocated to New Hampshire to become a Quality Control Microbiologist.

What do you do for your job?
At Pepsi, I did a lot of validation work testing raw materials and the product formulation. When I was a Manufacturing Associate, my primary work was in chromatography and stock solutions. My work involves measuring endotoxin levels and bioburden. I do membrane filtration, GPT, and I carry out sampling on the plant floor.
